Warriors retain top spot in AVCA poll, congrats to Voss on OTB honor

Not a lot of movement in Monday’s poll except for two ties that are no longer

Hawaii (13-0) with 15 of the 16 votes at No. 1. BYU (17-3) at No. 2 with one vote, despite the loss at UCLA. Some stubborn people.

3. UC Santa Barbara (10-4). 4. Lewis (18-2). 5. Pepperdine (11-5. 6. UCLA (14-5). &. Long Beach State. UC Irvine out of poll for first time this season. UC San Diego (3-9) drops a spot to 13.

My guess an award from the Big West will be coming as well.

Voss had a match-high eight blocks along with seven kills on a perfect 1.000 attack percentage in a four-game victory on Friday to open a two-match series against CSUN. He also had a season-high nine kills and hit .667 in the series finale sweep.

Other awardees:

  • National Setter of the Week: Quinn Isaacson, Ball State
  • National Opposite of the Week: Kevin Kobrine, UCLA
  • National Outside Attacker of the Week: Tobi Azeez, Mount Olive

  1. Here is the link to the latest RPI:

More non-sensical results, which will continue because MSPF and BW are playing in conference bubbles and grossly unbalanced schedules among the Div I-II teams:

    1. Daemon at #4 (4-0), D’Youville at #5 (and they are 0-2 in DivI-II matches, both losses to Daemon), Mount Olive #10…come on, I know it is just math, but it doesn’t pass the eye test, or brain test.

    2. Top AVCA teams getting no RPI love (listed as team/AVCA rank/RPI rank): UCSB/#3/#18, Pepperdine/#5/#13, UCLA/#6/#14, Grand Canyon/#9/#24, UCSD/#13/#28…btw, these are all BW and MSPF teams who only play conference opponents.

    3. In the AVCA top 15 rankings, BigWest has 4 team, MSFP has 4, MIVA has 4, EIVA has 3. In the top 15 RPI rankings, the team representations are BW 2, MSPF 3, MIVA 5, EIVA 2, Conf Carolinas 1, and Independents 2. The teams in conference bubbles are hurt in RPI relative to the AVCA opinions. 19 teams are tied for the worst non-conference RPI in Div I-II because they have no true non-conference opponents: all BW & MSPF, 3 independents, 2 MIVA, 1 EIVA.

    4. LBSU is #11 (and I think they are a tier below UH and BYU) despite having a 5-3 record. Too few matches to be ranked IMO.

Given the unusual nature of this season, RPI is not very useful. There are top RPI ranking teams who have played less than 10 matches. Conference bubbles prevent non-conference play for many teams while giving advantages to those who have. More than any other year in recent history, human judgment and analysis, rather than a reliance on the RPI statistic, should be used to determine championship at-large bids.

  2. Stubborn indeed…either that or people are remembering last year’s UH-BYU series…on the flip side, I guess you have to ask if UCSB is better than BYU?
