BVB: Igiede FOY, 4 pairs earn BWC honors; Warriors finish unanimous No. 1

Sorry, traveling most of day Monday and playing catchup

Freshman Amber Igiede was named Freshman of the Year, and she and partner Brooke Van Sickle were one of four Hawai’i pairs honored by the Big West in its all-conference honors on Monda

Joining the Flight 1 pair of Igiede and Van Sickle as first-team selections were No. 2 Pani Napoleon-Jaime Santer and the No. 4 pair of Ilihia Huddleston-Kaylee Glagau, The No. 5 pair of Anna Maidment-Sofia Russo, playing at Flight 5, were named honorable metion.

Napoleon, who was named to the second team in 2019, and Russo, an honorable mention two years ago, are repeat honorees. Meanwhile, Igiede, Van Sickle, Santer, Huddleston, Glagau, and Maidment are all first-time award winners after completing their first full collegiate seasons.

Igiede achieved the league’s top freshman honors while remarkably playing her first competitive season ever in the sport. The indoor crossover and native of Baton Rouge, La., played primarily at the top two flights all year, the majority with Van Sickle with whom she won 12 of her final 13 matches with to finish 16-7 overall. It is the fifth straight Freshman of the Year award for the BeachBows

Igiede joins Emily Maglio (2016), Morgan Martin (17), Lea Monkhourse (18( and Napoleon (19).
UH concluded the season 17-10 overall and advanced to the Big West Championship finals for the fifth straight time, finishing second for the second consecutive time.

++++++

For the 52nd time in program history, 10th straight week, Hawai’i No. 1 in the AVCA coaches poll. Warriors finish 17-1 after sweeps of No. 2 BYU and No. 3 UC Santa Barbara in the final four. (even CUI coach Shawn Patchell finally had to conceded this one 😉 )

4. Lewis. 5. Pepperdne. 6. UCLA. 7. Penn State.

Belmont Abbey, which advance to the final seven,  received 4 votes. to technically tie for 17 with CSUN. Ball State and UC Irvine tied for No. 15

It is the SECOND time Hawai’i finishes at No. 1, joining the 2020 national championship team.

I am continuing to be annoyed by UH Sports Information’s revisionist history. The 2011 is NOT the first title and IMHO it disrespects the accomplishment of the 2002 team to continue to say it is. That the school had to vacate the title after an arbitrary decision by the NCAA, with which most everyone in the volleyball world disagrees with to this day, is wrong. I do believe that with the rule change in amateurism the banner would be returned on appeal. What has never made sense is that collegiate golfers can play in PRO-Ams (emphasis on PRO) and that’s OK but a foreign player can’t play with professionals is a bad double standard.

  1. Here’s the question I want answered…why doesn’t UH apply for reinstatement? Where’s the pride and drive to right this wrong?

    • Not sure why not. I think the one time they thought about was right about the time they were going through the basketball issues with Gib. and didn’t want to remind the NCAA 😉
