VNL men: U.S. sweeps Italy

The U.S. men used nine aces and kept the serving pressure on Italy throughout Tuesday’s Volleyball Nations League Week 4 match in a 25-15, 25-18, 25-21 sweep in Rimini.

Setter Micah Christenson (Kamehameha) was back in the starting lineup after taking last week off for the birth of his son. He had 17 assists, 5 digs and 2 aces. Libero Erik Shoji (Punahou) added 6 digs. Reserve setter Kawika Shoji (‘Iolani) dressed but did not play. Middle Taylor Averill (Hawai’i) did not dress.

The U.S. (5-5) next plays France Tuesday (7:30 a.m. HST).

Earlier Tuesday, Argentina defeated Bulgaria 25-20, 16-25, 25-18, 25-18.

Bulgaria’s Rado Parapunov (Hawai’i) had 11 kills, 2 blocks and 2 digs when moving back to opposite.

Later today, the Netherlands with Stijn van Tilburg (Hawai’i) takes on France (9 a.m. HST)
