Sadly, no fans allowed at season-opening events

This is not a UH decision. It doesn’t seem permanent, according to Honolulu mayor Rick Blangiardi.

“It is a fluid situation and we will continue to evaluate based on current conditions and impacts in the healthcare community,” he said. “All is not lost for the fall sports season, but we are urging people to get vaccinated now.”

Today City and County of Honolulu officials notified the University of Hawai’i that fans will not be allowed at UH Mānoa’s season-opening events due to the state’s recent record surge in COVID-19 cases and the resulting overwhelmed hospital capacity.

The decision applies to all UH Mānoa fall sports, including football at Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex, women’s volleyball at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center and women’s soccer at Waipi’o Peninsula Soccer Complex.

Ticket refund policy will be forthcoming and season ticket holders who are affected will be notified of their options.

The Wahine volleyball team is scheduled to open Aug. 27 at home with the Hawaiian Airlines Classic.

The Warrior football team’s home opener at the new Ching field is set for Sept. 4 against Portland State.

Wahine soccer have two exhibitions on lower campus. They defeated Tusculum 1-0 on Tuesday and host Hawaii Pacific Sunday. The home opener at Waipio is the Outrigger Kickoff next week with UH matches against North Texas Aug. 27 and South Dakota State Aug. 29.

Originally it was expected that all venues would allow fans at 50 percent capacity.

  1. Cindy, do you know how many season tickets have been sold for WVB this year? Seems like vaccinated season ticketholders could have been allowed in with social distancing required (meaning everyone couldn’t sit in their assigned seats, but could spread out around the arena)! 🙁

    • I asked but they didn’t have a number for the season ticket holders I agree but UH had no control it wasn’t their decision it was city and county UH”s Plan was to do exactly that 50% capacity proof of vaccination social distancing
