And it’s only Monday: Wahine setter Kate Lang earns Big West Freshman of Week

Busy day but fun and lots going on.

Wahine setter Kate Lang was named Freshman of the Week for the second consecutive week on Monday.

From the Big West

Lang  recorded her first two career double-doubles and helped lead Hawai’i to a pair of Big West victories and a 4-0 record to share the top line in the league standings.

Against Long Beach State, she efficiently distributed the Rainbow Wahine’s offensive attack, dishing out 37 assists while Hawai’i hit a team .349 hitting percentage with all five starting hitters recording at least six kills apiece in the sweep. She added a team-high 11 digs to capture the double-double.

On Sunday, Lang recorded career highs in assists (51) and digs (1) in the five-set win over Cal State Fullerton.

The other two awards went to UC Santa Barbara, the Gauchos also at 4-0 in the Big West.

Offensive POW went to Gaucho senior middle Rowan Ennis who was 9-1-11 against Cal Poly for a season-high .727  as  UCSB became the first team to sweep the Mustangs at home since 2016.

UH nominated Brooke Van Sickle.

Defensive POW went to Gaucho sophomore libero Macall Peed.  She had 15 digs in Friday’s sweep of Cal Poly, and matched her career high with 25 in the 3-1 win at Cal State Bakersfield.  In the win at Cal Poly, the Gauchos trailed 18-15 in Set 3 when Peed served for six straight as the team went on a 7-0 run that put UCSB up for good at 22-18.

Hawai’i nominated Amber Igiede.
