Hawai’i was the near-unanimous choice in the first AVCA poll of the regular season, receiving 16 of 19 first-place votes. The Warriors (2-0) have been ranked No. 1 for the 12th consecutive week dating back to last season and are No. 1 for the 54th time in program history. Hawai’i had 12 votes in the preseason poll of Dec. 20.
UCLA (0-0), with one vote, stayed at No. 2 (from the preseason poll) and Pepperdine (0-0) remained at No. 3.
Penn State (2-0) traded places with Long Beach State (0-0) at 4-5, Beach receiving the other two votes.
Also, junior setter Jakob Thelle doubled up on weekly honors when adding the Big West’s Offensive Player of the Week to Monday’s list. It was his first BWC honor of his career. Earlier in the day, the Norwegian national was named the national setter of the week by Off the Block (see previous thread.
Thelle had 72 assists (10.29 per set) with the Warriors hitting .367 in last week’s two wins over then-No. 12 Loyola of Chicago. He had a career-high six aces and tied his career high with four blocks in Wednesday’s season opener. Thelle finished the series with 10 digs, nine aces, five blocks and five kills.
UCI’s freshman opposite Hilir Henno was named both the Freshman and Defensive Player of the Week. The French national had a combined 40 points, averaging 3.88 kills, 3.25 digs, 0.75 blocks and 0.75 aces per set in his collegiate volleyball debut.
The Anteaters went 1-1 at the Stanford tournament, sweeping Lindenwood and losing to the Cardinal 3-2. Henno led UCI in digs in both matches, including 19 versus Stanford. He also posted five block assists and 22 kills against the Cardinal.
Warrior middle Guilherme Voss was nominated for Defensive POW.
