Hawai’i’s All-American duo of Kaylee Glagau and Brooke Van Sickle received the AVCA Top Flight Award on Thursday, the 11th BeachBows pair to be so honored.
Glagau and Van Sickle went 30-10 at Flight 1, becoming just the sixth UH pair to win 30 or more matches. Included in their victories were wins over a dozen top-flight teams from ranked squads, helping the BeachBows advance to its fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in six seasons.
Glagau-Van Sickle also were named the Big West Pair of the Year. This is Glagau’s second Top Flight Award, the sophomore from Canada also earning it in 2021 when going 14-4 at No. 4 with Ilihia Huddleston.
Van Sickle, daughter of former Warrior volleyball player Gary Van Sickle and HPU great Lisa Bragado, was born in Hilo and raised in Washington state. She will return for her super senior season in beach in 2023. Van Sickle completed her indoor eligibility in 2021 and was named an Honorable Mention All-American, becoming the second Wahine to earn All-America status in two sports in the same school year. The other was Emily Maglio (school year 2017-18)
The BeachBows’ Top Flight Awards have some in 2018 (5), 2019 (3) and 2021 (two). The award began in 2018.
In order for a pair to be eligible for the award, the two athletes must compete in at least 15 matches together and at a specific flight number. Should that pair win at least 75 percent of their matches — regardless of the overall result of the dual – they achieve “Top Flight” status.
