The 11th-seeded Hawai’i had its season ended today by Loyola Marymount 3-1 in the NCAA Women’s Collegiate Beach Championships in Gulf Shores, Ala.
The match had been postponed a day due to weather issues. This is the first season where the tournament is a single elimination.
The BeachBows (27-9) were down 2-0 after losing at No. 4 and 5. Kylin Loker and Riley Wagoner, playing at No 2, gave Hawai’i what would be its only point when defeating Kristine Garder-Abbey Thorup, 21-17, 21-14.
The clinching point came at No. 3 where Jaime Santer and Ilihia Huddleston couldn’t hold on against Jacinda Ramirez-Isabelle Reffel, 19-21, 21-18, 15-8. The match was halted with the No 1 flight still playing.
Melanie Paul-Valma Prihti had match point on Brooke Van Sickle-Kaylee Glaugau when it was called, 13-21, 21-11, 14-13.
The Lions (29-9) advance after handing Hawai’i its third straight loss. LMU, the sixth seed, plays third-seeded USC (30-5) at 7 a.m. HST.
Big West Tournament champion Long Beach State was also eliminated, the ninth-seeded Beach falling to No. 8-seed Cal 3-2.
The only upset of the first round was No. 10 Stanford downing No. 7 Grand Canyon, 3-2. The Cardinal take on No 2 TCU later today.
In the other quarters, UCLA (1) plays Cal (8), Florida State (4) meets LSU (5) and USC (3) faces Stanford (10).
I’ve been following for several years and usually go to at least two matches- one at Queens and one at Ching. Watched at 3 AM today. I don’t quite understand why Maidment/Russo were never inserted back into the rotation late in the year. I know they were in a slump. But Burton/Kruse didn’t do well at tail end of the schedule either, and the M/R team had much more experience.
